Div UAZ and Lada Niva concepts

That classic UAZ Buhanka has shown up in more action flicks than a stuntman with a death wish. Boxy, stubborn, built like a brick smokehouse and about as subtle as a tank rollin through town. I have jawed about it plenty over on my gearhead corner of the internet.

But let us shift gears to somethin a little more street minded.

Take a gander at that UAZ Buhanka 2020 concept. Now that right there is a wild lookin rig. You could toss a couple snowmobiles in the back and head straight for the backcountry, or build it out into some high tech overland RV setup with lights, screens, and enough gadgets to make NASA blush. It keeps that old school loaf of bread shape but dresses it up like it is ready for the future.

Then you got the UAZ Patriot, which them Russians have been crankin out since the 1990s. Somehow that thing has managed to keep itself lookin fairly modern all these years. And mind you, that aint even a Lada product. That is UAZ doin their own rough and ready off road business, buildin trucks that look like they expect mud.

Now speakin of Lada, let us talk Niva.

The Lada Niva might just be the toughest little cockroach 4x4 the Russians ever bolted together. Simple, mechanical, honest. Then somebody went and dreamed up the Niva Gelandewagen Concept. Bold move, considerin the Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen is about a country mile ahead in fit and finish. Truth be told comparin em is like racin a mule against a thoroughbred. Might have made more sense to stack it up against a Citroën Mehari or a Volkswagen Amarok. Still, you gotta respect the ambition.

Now the Niva Bronto and the Urban versions those are the slicked up modern takes on that old farm tough classic. Lift em, wrap em in knobby tires, bolt on steel bumpers and some attitude, and you got yourself a gritty little trail boss that looks meaner than it has any right to.

And then there is the Niva Zubr Concept. Now that one is a proper bruiser of a prototype. Wide stance, aggressive trim, built right before sanctions came rainin down over the war in Ukraine, back when Renault still had skin in the Lada game. It feels like the last big swing before the lights flickered.

End of the day these Russian rigs might not win no beauty pageants, but style em right and they got a kind of cold war outlaw charm that is hard to ignore.
