Oldsmobile Cutlass & Oldsmobile Cutlass 2022 concept!

My Uncle’s Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Back in the day, my uncle drove a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme in a bright red color. By 2014, he supposedly had a Volvo XC60 that, when the sun hit just right, reflected the same fiery hue. When he lived in the U.S. in the late 1970s, that Oldsmobile was his one and only used car.

Now let me tell y’all, the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme had a reputation for stompin’ on most other American muscle cars of the time. My uncle claimed he could easily outrun a Chevrolet Corvette or a Pontiac Trans Am in his Cutlass! And it wasn’t just about speed—it was one of the most comfortable muscle cars to drive, thanks to Oldsmobile’s knack for buildin’ smooth-ridin’ machines.

Oldsmobile was ahead of its time in more ways than one. They were one of the first American brands to dive into front-wheel drive, and back in 1962-63, they introduced the Oldsmobile F-85 Cutlass Jetfire, which had a turbocharger—way before that became common.

But, as the years went on, Oldsmobile started to lose its spark. By the late ‘70s and into the ‘80s, the Cutlass had grown a bit dull, and by the 1990s, the brand was nearly a shadow of its former self. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the last Oldsmobile rolled off the assembly line in Detroit. General Motors pulled the plug because the brand just wasn’t sellin’ like it used to.

Fast forward to 2022, though, and GM teased a prototype for a 2022 Oldsmobile Cutlass inspired by the very model my uncle drove back in the ‘70s. Now, wouldn’t that be somethin’? I’ve got my fingers crossed for that one!

And hey, even those bland Oldsmobiles from the ‘90s still have potential—style ‘em up, tweak ‘em, and you could turn one into a real head-turner.
